Renly Baratheon, also called Renly the Victorious, Renly the Usurper, and other, worse names, was the second member of the Baratheon dynasty to sit the Iron Throne, ruling from 299 AC to 320 AC. His children that lived to adulthood, by his wife, Margaery Tyrell, were Robert, Loras, and Cortnay Baratheon.

Renly pressed his claim for the throne after the death of his brother, King Robert. During the War of the Five Kings he took Storm's End and King's Landing, sending his sole surviving brother, Stannis, to the Wall, and claiming the realm for his own. Despite his sore won victory, however, he was unable to unite all of Westeros, the Kingdom of the North - consisting of the Riverlands, Iron Islands, Vale, and North - managed to break away. King Renly would resent this division, but would not get the chance to remedy it.

Early Life

Born in 277 AC, Renly was the youngest of the three sons of Lady Cassana Estermont and Lord Steffon Baratheon of Storm's End, where he grows up. Only a boy of six at the time of Robert's Rebellion, he spends the war under siege in Storm's End, together with his older brother, Stannis, where he was witness to the desperation of the starving garrison.

By his older brother Robert, Renly was eventually granted the seat of Storm's End, upsetting Stannis, who felt that, as the elder of the two, Storm's End was his by rights. When Renly turned sixteen, he made a lord's progress across the Stormlands, for mark his coming of age. During this progress, he also visited Tarth, where Renly met Brienne of Tarth. He danced with her, and was courteous with her.

Princess Arianne Martell recalls that Renly also visited Sunspear once. She had tried her best to seduce Renly, but remembers that he had seemed more bemused than inflamed by her attempts.

During his time as Lord of Storm's End, Renly took Loras Tyrell as his squire. Both Renly and Loras were gay, and later on became lovers.

Renly was eventually named to the small council, where he occupied the position of master of laws. While he was at court, his castellan at Storm's End was Ser Cortnay Penrose, who raised King Robert's bastard son, Edric Storm, for them.

War of the Five Kings

King Renly would win his throne during the War of the Five Kings, fighting against House Baratheon of Storm's End and Dragonstone, as well as the Lannisters. He took the city of King's Landing in the Siege of King's Landing, despite a terrible defeat in the Battle of the God's Eye.

At the end of the war, King Renly would sign the Treaty of Crowns, a truce between King's Landing and Winterfell.
