House Velaryon of Driftmark rules the island of Driftmark, the largest island of Blackwater Bay in the crownlands. Their castles include Driftmark and High Tide. The head of House Velaryon is titled Lord of the Tides and Master of Driftmark. The Velaryons are sworn to Dragonstone.
Their arms depict a silver seahorse on sea green. Their words are "The Old, the True, the Brave".
History[]
Many years before the Targaryens came to Dragonstone with fire and blood, House Velaryon established themselves in the Blackwater, an ambitious family of merchants and sailors who ruled the Narrow Sea just as the dragonlords ruled the skies. Throughout their history, they have been tied intimately to the Targaryen dynasty- to their benefit and their peril.
Though the height of the house's power came under the famed Sea Snake, Lord Corlys Velaryon, many Velaryons have served on the small council as Master of Ships, and their fleet and trading power is respected throughout Westeros and Essos.
Since the end of the War of the Five Kings, House Velaryon has been led by Lady Valaena Velaryon. A respected and venerable figure, she is widely known for her wealth, wits, and ruthlessness. She is the maternal grandmother of Cassana Baratheon, the lady of Dragonstone. Valaena ended up passing away after a few months of being sick. Her grandson, Orys has now become Lord of the house, and has began the construction of a new fleet of ships.
Location[]
House Velaryon controls the island of Driftmark, and with it the old castle of Driftmark (a nearly abandoned estate miles inland), the port of Hull, and the fortress of High Tide, which serves as the family's main residence.
